[Background] A soldier through and through, Sergei has always been a military man. His wife, Holly, was also in the military, as was their good friend Hank-- and, as were his son/adopted daughter. Sergei has, in the past, placed the military above his own family-- he protected the solar elevator above even his wife's life, pulling troops from the engaging force, essentially signing her death certificate. After that, his son Andrei never forgave him, and their relationship deteriorated-- Sergei held a great degree of guilt over their failed relationship, up to the day he died.
Within the series, Sergei is citizen of the Human Reform League, and serves in their military for the first season. When a "super soldier" is introduced to him, he's shocked to see that the super soldier is just a girl-child, someone he would not have thought capable of military service. Despite his own misgivings, Sergei accepted the Super Soldier, Soma Peries, and even began to care for her, encouraging her to express herself outside of her Super-Soldier identity.
After the Federation came about, Sergei worked for them, though still as just a normal soldier/Colonel, not as a member of A-LAWS, who recruited Soma from her blissful domestic father/daughter 4-year picnic. He watched the world around him, and didn't like what he saw-- but he chose to stay within the military, which had been his home for so many years. His son, Andrei, was the one to collect Soma-- the first contact they'd had in years. When his old friend, Hank Hercule, told him about a coup d'état he was planning, Sergei declined to participate, though he did not seem to report Hank's plan to his superiors. He was eventually sent to Hank to tell the rebelling soldiers that the Federation would not disband as they had asked, and was asking them to surrender.... at which point the giant space laser shot the elevator that the coup had centered on. Barely escaping in time to avoid GETTING CRUSHED BY FALLING ELEVATOR, Hank and Sergei helped the mobile suits that had been defending civilian settlements on the ground from falling debris... only to be spotted by his son, who assumed he was one of the rebels. Andrei killed him, claiming it as vengeance for his mother-- and Sergei let him, refusing to fight back, and even pushing Andrei away so that he would not get caught in the explosion that destroyed his suit.
[Personality] Soldier, stoic, sad-- Sergei is a lot of things. His nick name is the "Wild Bear of Russia", though not because he's some sort of crazy party animal-- because he's a ferocious and ridiculously talented pilot. Very talented, and very dedicated to the military. He's had his doubts, through the various corruptions he'd seen, but he stayed with them to the end, even though he knew he was on the wrong side of things. He stayed with the thing he believed in, hoping to change it, instead of letting it fall apart without him.
He does know when to let go, though-- when Soma/Marie asked to leave, he allowed it, even though he considered her his daughter and wanted to adopt her. He's loving, and selfless, and brave. He's just an all around good-hearted badass, willing to do what it takes to get the job done, no matter the personal pain he feels because of it. He doesn't burden other people with his problems, seems a bit like he still believes in chivalry, and just wants to live happily with his family. He doesn't give up-- not if he believes in something. He's got an iron will, but is willing to bend to make the people around him happy.
[Specialties/Abilities] Um. Being a super kick ass mobile suit pilot, inspiring tsundere people into warm hearted domestic bliss. (But not his son.)
[Affection] Rather formal with most people, as he is a military man. Might chastise people for inappropriate conduct. Exceptions are when he is close to another character, when he becomes a lot more warm-hearted and kind, though still not very touchy-feely.
[Fighting] He's a bear of man. HUGE. He's a soldier, knows how to both throw and take a punch, and has the training to back him up. Not someone to tackle lightly, but has no special magic powers. Also he's kind of... getting on in years. Would not initiate fights, though has been known to beat people for idiocy.
